Shooting victim found dead in Highlands Ranch

Authorities say a suspect was also found deceased

The body of a woman who was the apparent victim of a fatal shooting was found in a vehicle in Highlands Ranch on Saturday, and a suspect in the shooting was later found dead, authorities said.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the body of the victim was found in a vehicle parked at the Central Park shopping center near Park Central Drive and Lucent Boulevard on Saturday morning.

The sheriff's office on Monday identified the victim as Jamie Sullivan, 49, of Highlands Ranch.

While authorities searched for a suspect, they asked people in the area to shelter in place, and they warned the public to stay away from the area. That request was lifted about 12:30 p.m., TV station KCNC-CBS4 reported.

That afternoon, Capt. Darren Weekly of the sheriff's office said via a Twitter  video that a suspect in the shooting "has been located deceased. We believe that the suspect died by his own hands."

He was later identified by the sheriff's office as 55-year-old Art Valentine.

Authorties believe "the suspect and victim were known to each other," Weekly said. He said authorities believe there is no ongoing danger to the community.

As of Monday, the case remained under investigation.

"This is still an open investigation and no more information will be released at this time," the sheriff's office said Monday.

UPDATE: This story was updated Dec. 6 with the identifications of the victim and suspect as released by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
