Letter to the editor: Join fight against air pollution

I am a concerned parent in Douglas County. My children deserve to breathe clean air. Everyone deserves to breathe clean air. We should be able to enjoy the great outdoors in Colorado without worrying about whether or not the air quality will harm our lungs.

While poor air quality is unfortunately nothing new here along the Front Range, I do not think poor air quality should be something we “accept.”

Governor Polis released his greenhouse gas reduction roadmap at the beginning of 2021. Some work has been done to reach the goals required by law, but much more needs to be done and immediately in the interest of public health.

The Air Quality Control Commission has an opportunity to act now. It should take a big step to require methane emissions from oil and gas production be directly regulated. They need to adopt a proposal that not only reduces harmful GHGs, but is enforceable, equitable and verifiable, which is also required by law.

We have a moral obligation to our children to get this right and not a second to waste.
