Letter to the editor: Examine disease numbers

We continue to be bombarded with selective fear “facts” about COVID-19 that fail the “science test.”

For instance, how many people know what the percent is of deaths among those under 18 and diagnosed with the virus that have died? It is officially zero in California … well, actually .00005% according to their most recent report of the 653,300 cases through September from the California Department of Public Health. It’s approximately the same nationwide.

So, the mandates for masks and vaccinations for the young are not warranted by examining the statistics. Even the percent of deaths among those under 50 with COVID is minimal, and that would include most parents of school-age children.

If we analyze it, many of us would prefer to have our children get immunity by getting the virus, since it is most frequently very mild.

Nobody knows how many people have been exposed to the virus and their immune systems have fought it off. And for the most part it is believed that individuals that have had the virus without vaccines have stronger immunity to COVID than those relying on vaccines.

It seems that the societal fear factor trumpeted in recent years by university faculty and students that someone said a word that “hurt my feelings,” has turned a breeze into a tornado.
