An Air Force officer with experience in IT, communications, human resources and education was selected to be the interim leader of the Douglas County School District.
The Douglas County School Board voted 4-3 the evening of Sept. 19 to name Damon Brown as the sole finalist for the position of interim superintendent. The board had narrowed down candidates to Brown and Corey Wise, director of learning and leadership for DCSD and former principal at Legend High School.
A day later, Brown withdrew his name from consideration for the post, according to a DCSD news release. The board had been set to undergo a 14-day public vetting process of Brown before he could be installed as interim superintendent.
“I greatly enjoyed getting to know the (DCSD) board better and learn so much about your outstanding school district,” Brown said in the news release issued Sept. 20.
The release added: "The DCSD Board of Education will reconvene at a future date to continue the process of naming an interim superintendent."
Brown, an Air Force Reserve officer and former deputy superintendent of Mapleton School District in Adams County, served at the Pentagon before changing career paths toward education, he said in the Sept. 19 board meeting held virtually on YouTube.
The school board's seven members spent all day Sept. 19 interviewing candidates to replace Thomas Tucker, who is resigning, effective Sept. 30.
After eight hours of executive session, the meeting opened to the public virtually at 4 p.m. and adjourned 2 1/2 hours later. All directors commented on the process the board completed to reach this point. Despite close to 11 hours of interviews and deliberating, several board directors expressed difficulty reaching a final decision.
Board members discussed the pros and cons of hiring and internal versus an external candidate. The majority agreed that Brown's connections throughout the state, as well as his background in a variety of fields, made him the best choice to lead the district.
